It was the morning of 26th May 1989 and what a nervous day it was going be all day, but by the end of it oh what a day!! Arsenal fans like you and I know the full story off by heart, but the Arsenal’s awesome 1989 title story is set to find a whole new audience with the release of a brand new film called ’89’.
As we all know with one game left of the 1988-89 season, we were having to play away to Liverpool at Anfield on May 26th knowing that the either of us could win the league and be crowned champions on the very last day of the season. The match of course had been postponed following the tragic Hillsbrough disaster and was moved to after the actual FA Cup Final.
We trailed Kenny Dalglish’s Liverpool side by a full three points and four goals coming into the game, but with superiority in terms of goals scored meant that we only had to win by two-goals to seal the title. I say only…
It was 0-0 at half-time and we were still in the contest but then seven minutes after the restart Alan Smith nodded in our the first goal of the night but of course we still needed that one more and a two goal cushion. As injury time approached and with just enough time for one more attack, Kevin Richardson won the ball back off John Barnes and passes it quickly back to our keeper John Lukic. He plays the ball out wide to Dixon on the right hand side just as quick, his long ball forward is then controlled by Smith who turns and plays the ball into Thomas. Thomas then closed in on Liverpool keeper Bruce Grobelaar and with defenders around him too he… well you know the rest and as they say, history was made.
Gunners players from the day like the legend Tony Adams, Michael Thomas himself, Lee Dixon as well as the manager George Graham appear in ’89’, a film documentary set to be released on DVD, Blu-Ray and Digital Download this month on November 20th.
Our Arsenal legends come together for brilliant film based on our dramatic 1988/89 title win, it was even more dramatic since it had been more than 18 years since out last like title. The only think standing in our way, an away trip to Anfield to face the mighty Liverpool.
Other legends like Ian Wright, Paul Merson and Alan Smith all feature as well as they tell their tales of the night which is specifically based on and around the night we won it.
The book, and later superb film, ‘Fever Pitch’ was also set around the events of that season, but that was actually through the eyes of a lifelong fan. This film is from the players point of view.
Lee Dixon took to Twitter himself to post the trailer and said: “Its been very hard to keep THIS a secret. Very excited to introduce 89thefilm to you, coming 20 Nov!”
