It’s been far from an impressive season so far for Arsenal under long-standing boss Arsene Wenger. The Gunners have fallen off the pace in the search for a top-four position this campaign after underwhelming results in the Premier League. They also exited the Champions League in the most disastrous fashion, suffering an embarrassing 10-2 aggregate defeat at the hands of constant European conquerors Bayern Munich. That remarkable last-16 tie saw the calls for Wenger’s dismissal gain even more momentum, as fans seek a new man in charge at the Emirates.
Wenger is now deep into his 21st term as Gunners manager, but the Frenchman has been on the receiving end of a flurry of criticism over his current credentials. The 67-year-old is seemingly scarring his legacy in the English capital with each passing game, as Arsenal continue to struggle in the top-flight. Wenger set to remain in charge?
Despite his exit surely becoming increasingly likely, reports have emerged of late that Wenger is set to extend his stay at the club which he has served since 1996. If it does indeed come to fruition, such a bold move from Arsenal’s hierarchy and the manager himself will surely cause huge frictions among supporters.
Wenger is clearly adamant he can overturn this poor patch and finally deliver more success to the Gunners. One of his priorities, or that of the club’s top officials, should undoubtedly be to sort out the current contract situations of star men and prolific duo Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil. No matter who will be taking up the reins at the Emirates next season, the club’s top brass should surely be focusing a lot of their efforts towards extending the stays of this crucial couple of attackers.
German playmaker Ozil is a key component for his current employers, despite a recent string of poor performances. Meanwhile, clinical Chile forward Sanchez has proved his worth this season by firing in over 20 goals on all fronts. Ozil and Sanchez should be club focus Arsenal are reliant on both men and, with such hopes resting on their shoulders each passing week, if they fail to perform, results usually suffer. That being said, even with the pair showcasing their talents at the highest level, the capital club have still struggled.
There are obvious areas that need improving all over the pitch for Arsenal, and the potential signing of more world-class stars would surely boost the chances of retaining the services of Ozil and Sanchez. The deadly duo have been linked heavily with respective moves away from the club, with the likes of Manchester City, Real Madrid and Juventus being tipped to make big-money swoops for their future services. It’s a clear sign of Arsenal’s recent downfall to see them at odds-on 2/9 in the Premier League betting not to secure a top-four place this season.
If Arsenal are currently dwindling with these attacking stars in their ranks, how bad will the decline be without them after the summer? As fans call for Wenger’s axing at the helm and the board seemingly looking set to put their faith in the Frenchman again, maybe efforts should be instead switch towards making sure Ozil and Sanchez don’t depart in the coming months. With plenty of potential suitors lurking on the horizon, Arsenal will need to be swift in finally retaining their two star men before it’s too late.
